I used to have an older version of my research log. It was a Google Document. I wanted to add it to my new blog so it can be found in one place. I have updated the links so they will give the same results that I found but with English headers (ie Parish instead of Paróquia).

I am excited because the Madeira Archive has redone their website. There databases are updated, they have an English version of their website, and the most exciting thing is that they have added a passport database. I searched this database and so far have found two other de Melin’s who immigrated to America. One (Antonio Pedro) before Guilherme and Lucrécia, and one (Anceleto) after. It may be helpful to trace them through time so I can find more out about the da Silva’s. I have just barely started to search this source and am confident that I will be able to find more information.

I think I have found Rosa Maria. The marriage certificate’s search link is: http://62.48.223.202:81/bds/casamentosuk/Ccasamentoslist.asp?x_Marido=Roberto&z_Marido=LIKE%2C%27%25%2C%25%27&x_Mulher=Rosa+Maria&z_Mulher=LIKE%2C%27%25%2C%25%27&x_Paroquia_ID=44&z_Paroquia_ID=%3D%2C%2C

While consolidating the sources in my database I realized I didn’t look up Julia dos Santos Coelho in the Madeiran Archive’s database. I may have found her here: http://62.48.223.202:81/bds/baptismosuk/ClistaBaptismoslist.asp?x_Filho=Julia&z_Filho=LIKE%2C%27%25%2C%25%27&x_Pai=dos+Santos+&z_Pai=LIKE%2C%27%25%2C%25%27&x_Paroquia_ID=37&z_Paroquia_ID=%3D%2C%2C

I also have made a limitation to the Paulo da Silva Maria Antónia de Vasconcelos family. I think the whole family is listed by this search: http://62.48.223.202:81/bds/baptismosuk/ClistaBaptismoslist.asp?x_Pai=Paulo+da+Silva&z_Pai=LIKE%2C%27%25%2C%25%27&x_Mae=Maria+Ant%F3nia&z_Mae=LIKE%2C%27%25%2C%25%27&x_Paroquia_ID=37&z_Paroquia_ID=%3D%2C%2C

Today I tried the marriage database and it worked. I searched “paulo da silva” under Marido and “Porto Santo” under paroquia and here’s what I turned up:

http://62.48.223.202:81/bds/casamentosuk/Ccasamentoslist.asp?x_Marido=paulo+da+silva&z_Marido=LIKE%2C%27%25%2C%25%27&x_Paroquia_ID=44&z_Paroquia_ID=%3D%2C%2C

Paróquia: Porto Santo
Ano: 1710

Mulher: Júlia dos Santos Coelho
Livro: 998
Folha: 36 v.º

The upshot is from what I can tell the Paulo da Silva is the same Paulo da Silva in the birth record and he did remarry a Maria Antonia.

Today I decided to work on my family history. I hit an interesting possibility. I searched the Madeiran Archives for the baptism record of Paul da Silva the father of Guilherme da Silva and grandfather of Joao da Silva. The only information I have is that he was married to Julia dos Santos in 1857. Well, I looked for “Paulo” with the father’s surname as “Silva” and turned up this hit:

http://62.48.223.202:81/bds/baptismosuk/ClistaBaptismoslist.asp?x_Filho=Paulo&z_Filho=LIKE%2C%27%25%2C%25%27&x_Pai=Silva&z_Pai=LIKE%2C%27%25%2C%25%27&x_Paroquia_ID=37&z_Paroquia_ID=%3D%2C%2C
Filho: Paulo
Pai: Paulo da Silva de Melim
Mae: Ana de Vasconcelos*
Paróquia: Porto Santo
Data: 22-03-1835
Livro: 987
Folha: 40

The translation on the observation is: 1st time married 28 Nov 1857, 2nd the 28 Jun 1868 & died in 26 Jul 1910.

Based on the information that I have currently this may be my hit! I have the children I was able to find and their christenings range from 1858 to to 1866. It is a strong possibility.

I’m going to look for the second marriage record for Paulo da Silva, to see if he was married in 1868 and if there is a note that it is his second. The marriage database is DOWN!!! Oh the agony! I’ll have to wait until they fix it, to continue to do my searches.

I made a quick searchand think I have found the second marriage. If this is really the case I feel for the mother. Here’s what I found:

I found these names by first searching the baptism records where the father is Paulo da Silva. When I got the results and was sure that I had the Paulo da Silva and Julia dos Santos, I noticed the Maria Antonia children. The range is 1869 to 1892. That would fit in the after the 2nd marriage (28 Jun 1868) but before his death (26 Jul 1910). I would have to get the film and look up these children to make sure that this is the same Paulo da Silva. 11 kids with the second wife and 5 with the first, spanning 1858 to 1892. Wow that’s a family! I still need to look Paulo da Silva up in the marriage database to see if this is right. If so I need to get the baptism film from Salt Lake’s Family History Library.

Today I have looked over my family history log. I still need to get those two films to research marriages. I also need to get the obituary films. There have been a lot of children that I have found that have seemed to have died and then the parents have another child and name this second (or in one instance the third!) child the same name as the deceased child. I need to verify this by looking in the obituaries for the death dates of the children, and see what information is on these records.

I recently researched the family of Guilherme da Silva. On the 1920 US Census, Lucrécia reports that she had 7 children with 3 that are living. I knew the 3 living children. I didn’t know the names of the remaining four. I found them in the Madieran Archives database. There is another João and three Maria’s. These are children that I need to get a death date for.

After a brief pause due to moving across the country, I have resumed my family history research. I cannot find the scanned copies of the original documents, but I do still have the originals. I have updated my database with the baptismal information, and added in the marriage dates.

Posted: 10 Feb 2006 by Mike Silva
Today I scanned my copies of the original documents. I also found a new to do: I need to look on FHL film #1111014 for Pedro de Melin & Escolastica’s marriage in 1815. The Madieran Archive says it’s on page 131. I also need to look at obituary records for two of my families. They have two kids with the same name, so I think that one died young and when the new baby was born (s)he received their deceased sibling’s name.

About a week ago, I looked up the birth records on the microfilms at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. Some of the films were readable, while others were not (the ink on the pages had faded). I ordered a film from the vaults and it should be there today. I just called the library and it is in. I will go down to the library to view it. … I went to the library and found the baptismal documents that I wanted!

The following searches have been preformed at the Madeiran Archives (http://www.arquivo-madeira.org/).

I searched for Guilherme DA SILVA and siblings’ baptism records and found them. I searched for “da silva” in the Pai field, then looked for his parents. Then I sorted the list by parents and found his siblings. This is very exciting because I have looked at the Family History Library’s copy and it is not legible (the ink has faded on the pages of the book). This allows me to find the parents by tracing the roots collaterally. This is what I found:
