I searched the Madeira Archive marriage database for their record. Based on census records, the couple were married around 1883. Wanting to get as many hits as possible I searched using %José% and %Clara% as the husband and the wife respectively. The search produced one result, which was not a match.
I then remembered that Ancestry.com’s 1900 Census record has Clara and José’s date of immigration as 1880 (see the previous post for an explanation of how I got to this point). If this is true, then the couple would have been married in Hawaii, which could explain why there was no results.
