I searched the Madeira Archive’s Passport Database for José Soares. I first searched using José Soares in the search field searching the “Exact phrase.” The results included too many hits that were not a possibility, so I used the advanced search. I searched using José Soares as the petitioner. I then sorted the 14 results by destination. There was only one that was traveling to the United States.
Here’s the link to the record. The record is:
Petitioner José Soares
Companion Violante de Freitas
Process Nº 68
Passport Nº 156
Date of Baptism (Petitioner) 4/15/1856
Age (Petitioner) 27
Father (Petitioner) António Soares
Mother (Petitioner) Antónia Rosa de Jesus
Name of the Children
Comments Estado civil: solteiro. A acompanhante é viúva de João de Freitas e companheira do requerente.
The comment’s translation is “ Civil state: bachelor. The companion is widower of João of Freitas and friend of the petitioner.”
This is an interesting hit because I have José Soares’s birthday as Apr 1857. This was found on the 1900 U.S. Census. Here’s a link to Ancestry.com’s image. It took a little digging to find the record in Ancestry.com (due to the name being misspelled by the transcriber as Joe Saarls). The census records state, however, that the year that he immigrated was 1880, which was the same year that Clara immigrated.
