I was reviewing Paulo da Silva and Julia Coelho’s marriage record and I noticed that it listed her parents as Manuel Coelho de Menezes (sp?) Jardim and Maria dos Santos. The spelling is in question because the z is more Spanish than Portuguese.
According to the same record, Maria was from Madeira and Manuel from Porto Santo. I found similar information in another record. Jose’s (the son of Paulo da Silva and Julia Coelho) christening record corroborated.
I searched for their marriage record at the Madeira Archives searching “Manuel%Coelho%” for the husband and “Maria%dos Santos%” for the wife and leaving the parish blank, not knowing if they were married on Maderia or Porto Santo. This search returned two hits:
|Husband (*)||Wife (*)||Parish (*)||year (*)||Book (*)||Leaf (*)|
|Manuel Coelho de Meneses||Maria dos Santos||Porto Santo||1842||997||92 v.º|
|Manuel Fernandes Coelho||Maria dos Santos||Ponta do Sol||1815||461||122 v.º|
The first hit is a closer match because of the de Meneses in the name, and the year of the marriage. So I searched the baptismal records. I searched for “Manuel%Coelho%” as the father and “Maria%dos Santos%” as the mother. Here are the results:
|Son (*)||Father (*)||Mother (*)||Parish (*)||Date (*)||Book (*)||Leaf (*)|
|Domingas||Manuel Coelho de Meneses Jardim||Maria dos Santos*||Porto Santo||14-06-1837||987||109 v.º||VIEW|
|Júlia||Manuel Coelho de Meneses||Maria dos Santos*||Porto Santo||28-08-1840||988||54||VIEW|
|Micaela||Manuel Coelho de Meneses Jardim||Maria dos Santos*||Porto Santo||06-10-1838||988||9 v.º||VIEW|
The note for Micaela’s record is interesting: “Legitimada pelo subsequente casamento dos pais em 26.07.1842. Faleceu em 21.12.1900.” meaning “legitimated by subsequent marriage of the parents on 26 July 1842. Died on 21 Dec. 1900.”
So it looks like Manuel Coelho is the father of these three children. I need to continue to search for additional children.
